Golden Joystick Awards 2013: The best computer games of the year so far are named

PUT down your controllers and switch off those consoles… It’s the annual Golden Joystick Awards.

Now in it’s 31st year, these gongs celebrate the very best in gaming.

It’s been a record-breaking year with Grand Theft Auto 5 becoming the most expensive and fastest-selling title ever made.

Hosted for a second year running by Scottish comedian Ed Byrne, these gaming Oscars have been revamped to make them more relevant to gamers across the globe.

Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, Activsion and a host of other top names in computer games are all up for the coveted awards.

More than 10million votes were cast for the 15 fiercely contested categories.

It’s no surprise to see Grand Theft Auto V winning the game of the year.

This title broke numerous records on its release and was huge hit with gamers and the critics.

For the first time in the awards' history, an individual has been recognised for his lifetime’s work.

Ken Levine is BioShock’s Creative Director and Co-Founder of Irrational Games.

BioShock has sold more than 5million copies and is the highest rated first-person shooter of all time.

It's great to see the awesome Oculus Rift virtual reality headset picking up a prize. Having used the device we know just how good it is.

It has been a big year for gaming and, with the Playstation 4 and Xbox One about to hit shelves, it’s about to get a whole lot bigger.
